Bishop's Move's Corporate Social Responsibility

Share this:

For Bishop’s Move, Corporate Social Responsibility is about putting into practice our green values, both in our day-to-day operations as a company and as individuals.

Bishop’s Move has always been an environmentally aware company, committed to sustainable growth. This philosophy has helped us to grow from our founding in 1854 in to the UK’s largest family-owned removal group. Protection of the environment in which we live and operate is part of our core values, as well as being sound business practice.

Our overall objective is to minimise the environmental impact of all aspects of the company’s operations.

  • It is about good Corporate Governance
  • It is about having a positive and lasting impact on our staff and the local communities that we work in
  • It is about having a safe, healthy and sustainable working environment for everyone, our staff, our customers and the general public
  • It is about dealing responsibly with our customers and suppliers
  • It is about building the trust and respect of all our stakeholders
  • It is about understanding the environmental impact of our business

Our Environmental Policy

In this policy statement we are committing the company to:

  • Complying with all relevant environmental legislation and regulations.
  • Protecting the environment by striving to prevent and minimise our contribution to pollution of land, air, and water.
  • Seeking to minimise the creation of waste and maximise the efficient use of materials and resources through recycling.
  • Managing and disposing of all waste through safe and responsible methods.
  • Investing in improved energy efficiency and conservation in our operations.
  • Identifying any potential environmental nuisance problems, like smoke, dust and vibration, in our moves and taking steps to reduce them.
  • Encouraging our clients to take part in appropriate recycling schemes. We work with organisations such as Green Standards, Green Works and Computer Aid International and carbon consultants CLEVEL.
  • Working with suppliers, where possible, who have sound environmental policies.
  • Providing training for our staff so that we all work in line with this policy and within an environmentally aware culture.
  • Communicating our environmental performance to our employees and other significant stakeholders.
  • Developing our management processes to ensure that environmental factors are considered during planning and implementation.

This policy statement will be regularly reviewed and updated as necessary. Bishop's Move's management team endorses the policy statement and is fully committed to its implementation.

What does this Mean in Practice - The Green Way?

We are not new converts to the Green Way of doing business - we have been there from the beginning. The Green Way permeates every aspect of our day-to-day operations as removers, warehousemen, shippers, packers, general hauliers, distributors, freight-forwarders, property owners and landlords.
Here are some of the things that we do to turn:

Transport

  • Selecting vehicles on a life cycle cost basis that takes into account fuel efficiency, emissions, maintenance and repair costs.
  • Minimising empty running by better planning.

Waste Disposal

  • Ensuring that waste disposal is carried out by registered carriers and removed to registered disposal sites.
  • Keeping documentation to demonstrate compliance with statutory requirements.

Fuel Efficiency

  • Operating a “full inflation” policy to ensure our fleet tyres are inflated to manufacturers’ guidelines.
  • Fitting wind deflectors to all of our removal vehicles.
  • Having a fleet replacement policy in line with London low emission zone requirements.

Staff

  • Involving staff in recycling schemes for office and warehouse waste.
  • Encouraging double sided printing for all internal printing and filing.
  • Training drivers

Clients

  • Encouraging clients to use furniture recycling schemes with partners such as Green Works.
  • Encouraging clients to use computer recycling schemes with

Suppliers

  • Selecting suppliers and partners that have sound environmental policies.
  • Working with our suppliers to get the best environmental results for both parties.

Legislation

  • Complying with all the environmental legislation on waste disposal and other environmental aspects.

Recycling and Re-Use for Clients

When a client’s move involves the disposal of office furniture and/or computer equipment, we actively encourage the recycling or re-use of these items to avoid sending them to landfill.

We work with Green Standards, Green Works and Computer Aid International who are three of the charities that carry out the recycling and re-use services.

Furniture recycling and re-use with Green Standards and Green Works.
This has benefits for both the wider community and for the client.

Wider Community Benefits

  • Gives new life to used office furniture.
  • Repairable furniture will be repaired and re-used.
  • Badly damaged furniture will be re-manufactured or used for spares.
  • Diverts redundant furniture from landfill.
  • Provides employment for disadvantaged people.

Client Benefits

  • Enhances the CSR profile of the company.
  • Provides information to the company on what happens to the furniture and who benefits.
  • No costs for storage.
  • Full compliance with EU waste directives and UK regulations.

Computer recycling and re-use with Computer Aid International
This has benefits for both the wider community and for the client. The best estimate is that UK industry discards 3 million PCs each year, 90% are fully functional and only around 5% are reused.

Wider Community Benefits

  • Gives new life to redundant PCs.
  • Repair and refurbishment by qualified volunteers.
  • Schools and community organisations in the developing world, mainly Africa, receive donated PCs.
  • Diverts redundant PCs and toxic materials from landfill, so it is the best environmental solution.
  • Provides employment for disadvantage people.

Client Benefits

  • Enhances the CSR profile of the company.
  • Completely effective data and application wiping operation.
  • Provides information to the company on what happens to their redundant equipment and who benefits.
  • Full compliance with EU waste directives and UK regulations.

Working with Bishop's Move

When you work with Bishop’s Move you can be sure that our services are delivered with the least environmental impact that is practicably possible. We can also offset the remaining Carbon Footprint of your move with our partner, CLEVEL, which will help by funding renewable power, energy efficiency and forestry projects.

We’re identifying ways to reduce our carbon footprint as part of CLEVEL’s Carbon Balanced approach and achieving it through a mix of reforestation and fuel efficient cook stoves projects.

CLEVEL’s carbon compensation project in Uganda is replacing deforested zones within key national parks to deliver certified CO2 uptake and full restoration of vital ecosystems alongside creating part and full time employment opportunities.

CLEVEL’s ‘energy technology’ compensation project is providing communities with long term cash savings and health benefits, concentrating on cooking stoves made by pottery co-operatives. This reduces wood fuel use as well as indoor smoke pollution.
